What the Agafay Desert Really Is

The Agafay Desert is not the Sahara. It is a stone desert of soft, pale hills about 45 minutes from Marrakech, with the snow-capped Atlas Mountains on the horizon. There are no high sand dunes here, but there is something many couples value more: the feeling of complete remoteness, while your guests can still travel back to the city the same night.

For photos, that landscape is a gift. The hills catch the low evening light in layers of gold and rose, the sky stays wide and clean, and there is nothing modern in the frame except what you bring with you.

A Wedding Celebration in Agafay, From My Own Experience

The last time I photographed in Agafay was at Be Agafay, on the final day of a three-day wedding that had run from Friday to Sunday in Marrakech. Around fifty guests travelled out by bus, a little longer than the 45 minutes by car, to let the celebration slow down after the intensity of the wedding days.

What stayed with me was the atmosphere. Music drifting across the terrace, guests by the pool, and a view that simply kept opening up as the sun went down. After days of ceremonies and schedules, the desert gave everyone space to breathe, and that is exactly what the photos show. Those who wanted could ride camels into the hills at golden hour, which made for some of the most unexpected images of the whole weekend.

If you are planning a multi-day wedding in Morocco, a final day in Agafay is one of the most beautiful ways to close it.

  • About 45 minutes from Marrakech by car
  • A stone desert with Atlas Mountain views, not sand dunes
  • Best seasons: March to May and September to November
  • Sunset between 18:30 and 20:40, depending on the month
  • Cold nights in winter, so plan heaters and warm layers
  • Ideal as the final day of a Marrakech wedding

When to Plan Your Ceremony in Agafay

In the desert, the light decides everything. Between late morning and mid-afternoon the sun is hard and flat, the hills lose their shape and faces fall into deep shadow. About 90 minutes before sunset everything changes: the stone turns gold, then rose, and the Atlas Mountains appear in soft layers on the horizon.

That is why I plan Agafay celebrations backwards from the sunset. Begin your ceremony around 90 minutes before sunset, keep 30 to 40 minutes free for portraits in golden hour, and let dinner start as the blue hour settles over the camp. Nights in Agafay are very dark, so lanterns, candles and string lights are what make evening photos possible.

Mid-month times in Moroccan local time (GMT+1), rounded to five minutes. During Ramadan, Morocco sets its clocks back one hour, so all times shift one hour earlier; in 2027 that is expected roughly from early February to early March.

Planning Agafay Around Your Photos

A desert celebration looks effortless in pictures, but it rarely is. These are the things I talk through with couples before an Agafay wedding, because each of them changes what your photos will look like.

Timeline

A Sample Agafay Wedding Day, Planned Around the Light

This example is for a celebration in early October, when the sun sets around 19:00. In spring the same rhythm simply moves about an hour later.

  1. Leaving Marrakech

Guests travel out by shuttle. The last stretch is an unpaved track, so allow extra time.

  2. Arrival in the camp

Welcome drinks, a first look at the view and time for everyone to settle in.

  3. Ceremony

About 90 minutes before sunset, when the light is already soft and flattering.

  4. Toasts and music

Time with your guests while the hills begin to turn gold.

  5. Golden hour portraits

30 to 40 minutes in the hills, the most important light of the day.

  6. Sunset over the Atlas

The moment everyone stops and watches.

  7. Blue hour and dinner

Lanterns and string lights come on as dinner begins under an open sky.

  8. Fire, music and dancing

Heaters and fire pits keep everyone outside long into the night.

If your wedding has several days in Marrakech, this rhythm also works beautifully as a final evening in the desert, just like the celebration at Be Agafay I described above.

Agafay Desert Wedding Photography: Your Questions, Answered

Most couples from abroad complete the legal part of their marriage at home and celebrate with a symbolic ceremony in Morocco. In Agafay, that ceremony can look and feel exactly like a wedding, with vows, rings and your guests around you, without the paperwork of a legal marriage abroad. My Marrakech wedding guide covers the legal requirements in more detail.

Plan the ceremony to begin about 90 minutes before sunset. That gives you soft light for the ceremony and leaves the golden hour free for portraits. In October that means a start around 17:30, in May around 18:50. You’ll find the exact sunset times for every month on this page.

Yes. Many couples get ready in a riad or hotel in Marrakech and then drive out to the desert in the afternoon. The drive takes about 45 minutes by car and longer by bus, so I plan the day around it, making sure we arrive in Agafay well before golden hour.

Very much so. The open landscape works just as beautifully for two people as for a hundred, and many desert camps host intimate ceremonies, private dinners and overnight stays. For an elopement, the quiet hour before sunset is often the most beautiful time of the whole day.

With flash. There are no streetlights in Agafay, and after the blue hour the desert becomes truly dark, so I use flash to keep faces sharp and natural while still letting the lanterns, candles and fire glow in the background. That way the evening keeps its atmosphere in the photos, without turning into flat, harsh snapshots.

For destination weddings, most couples invest between €5,500 and €19,000, depending on the number of days, the locations and whether film is included. Travel and accommodation are included from the Cinematic Soul collection upwards. I’ll send you a personalized proposal once I know your date and plans.
